Allama Iqbal Open University, the First Distance Education University in South Asia, signed MoU with Tobacco – Smoke Free Islamabad, CADD and inaugurated as Tobacco – Smoke Free Facility

Allama Iqbal Open University, the First Distance Education University in South Asia, inaugurated as Tobacco – Smoke Free Facility that caters to the educational needs of 1.3 million students to enable them to study at their own place, at their own pace and at their own convenience. The University goes to the doorsteps of the students, irrespective of the distance and location of students. One can become a student of this university at any age as we consider education a life-long and continuous process.
Administration of AIOU has taken environment friendly initiative and protected the nonsmoker’s health. An MoU on tobacco control signed between Tobacco – Smoke Free Islamabad, CADD and AIOU on May 30, 2017. Dr. Minhaj us Siraj, Project Director/Deputy DG-CADD represented the CADD and Dr. Naeem Qureshi, Registrar, AIOU represented AIOU. Dr. Shahid Siddiqui, VC-AIOU and Ms. Maiza Hameed, Parliamentary Secretary, CADD were gracing the occasion.
Dr. Minhaj-us-Siraj, shared this piece of information while speaking at the seminar arrange in connection with declaration of the AIOU – a smoke-free facility.
Discussing the ill-effects of tobacco use on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, in line with this year’s World No Tobacco Day theme of ‘Tobacco: a threat to development,’ Dr. Minhaj-us-Siraj emphasized on the development goals related to poverty, health, child education, gender equity, climate, life under water, and peace. At the end an inauguration ceremony of tobacco smoke free facility was conducted.
